Hearts and Ashes
"You look ghastly pale. Go lay down before you collapse, girl."
I nodded weakly, knowing I needed air, distance from the death that clung to the Aetherium like a heavy fog. Rising from the wooden bed, I rinsed my hands in the beetroot water, the liquid staining my skin as though it could wash away the horror of what I had seen. But the vision lingered, clinging to the corners of my mind.
With shaky hands, I pushed through the doors of the Aetherium and staggered into the open air, my fingers threading through my hair in a futile attempt to calm my racing thoughts. What had I just witnessed? And why had the shadowed woman appeared again?
