The normalcy of it all felt strange, as if the night before had been part of some dream she wasn’t supposed to carry into daylight.
“Morning, sweetheart,” her mom greeted, glancing at her. “You look tired.”
“I didn’t sleep well,” Annie admitted, pouring herself a glass of water.
Her mom gave her a knowing smile. “Too much excitement from last night?”
Annie only shrugged, unwilling to let her mother dig into her thoughts. She grabbed a piece of toast, biting into it more forcefully than necessary.
By the time she got to school, Becky and Sussy were already waiting at their usual spot under the big mango tree near the gate. Becky was the first to notice Annie’s sluggishness.
