The forest was alive with silver. Moonlight dripped through the bare branches like liquid frost, pooling on the ground in pale, shimmering sheets. The Winter Moon—the brightest, coldest full moon of the year—hung heavy above the Winterwood, casting everything in a ghostlike glow. Lyra Whitlock paused at the treeline, breath fogging in the crisp air. Her heartbeat thudded unevenly beneath her cloak. This was her last moment alone before the festival. Before the ceremony. Before the pact that would bind her life to a man she’d never met.

“But they were never meant to contain it.” Kye reached for me as we passed the threshold. “Stay close.” The Hollows were as I remembered—wet air, shadows that moved too slow, trees that leaned just a little too far inward. It was a place the world tried to forget. It remembered us. Every footstep echoed like memory dragging itself behind us. Mira drew her blade. “Don’t speak unless you have to. It feeds on sound.” Finnick tapped his temple. “And thoughts.” Kye muttered, “Perfect.”

Dorian’s jaw flexed, but he said nothing. “We thought we could fight it. Contain what had begun to bleed into our world. The Hollowing didn’t have a face then just whispers. Disappearances. Wolves who forgot their names, packs that turned on their own young. But we waited too long. By the time we took it seriously, it had already taken the first of us.” He exhaled.

Serena said quietly, “you’re still their alpha, at least on paper. You have to take them back before Rowan does.” I shook my head. “He’ll expect that. We need to move faster.” Fiona looked at me, determination burning behind her exhaustion. “Then we go to the Hollow before he does.” Serena’s expression darkened. “He’s already there.” We left before dawn. The river glowed faintly behind us, the current whispering like a voice we couldn’t quite hear. The closer we got to the Hollow, the colder the air became. The trees grew darker, older, their trunks covered in strange silver veins that pulsed faintly like they were alive.

On the cliffs, dawn began to break. And in the harbor below, the people of Black Hollow would wake to calm waters— Never knowing how close the dark had come. But deep beneath the lighthouse, in the chamber of spirals and stone— Mara felt the ocean watching her back. Chapter 5: The Second Pulse Dawn painted the sea gold. From the harbor, Black Hollow looked peaceful—fishing boats rocking gently, gulls wheeling overhead, sunlight catching on windows still wet from the storm. The lighthouse beam still burned.

But those are just the stories people are willing to say out loud. The truth is worse. If the wards fall, the Hollowing will devour this town from the inside out. And Raven is the only one who can stop it. She disappears upstairs with Emily, and I finally let out the breath I’ve been holding since she stepped out of that car. Mom steps beside me. “You felt it, didn’t you?” I don’t answer. She doesn’t need me to. Her voice softens. “She’s the one, Noah.” I close my eyes. “I know.”

The black stone towers rose against the dim crimson sky, and the silver-veined paths glimmered beneath their feet. Students moved around them in clusters, some in deep, crimson-trimmed uniforms, others in darker grey and silver. Wolves. Vampires. Others, rarer and harder to place. Everyone looked like they belonged. Virelle felt that difference immediately. She was watched from every direction, not always openly, but constantly. Eyes tracked her progress. Whispers changed shape as she passed. The silver-blood girl. The oath anomaly. The thing from the Hollow Grounds.

Demi said. "That's it." Nora pushed the door open. "Come in." Inside. The restricted section was smaller than the main Vault. The light was low, amber, the kind designed for documents rather than people. Demi moved to the nearest shelf and looked at the spines with no titles, only dates in a notation system that used vampire calendar conventions rather than Gregorian ones. "How do you find anything here?" "Same way I find anything." Nora moved to the third row, second shelf. The dark leather volume was exactly where it had been. She lifted it carefully. The way you handled things that were old enough to make your hands feel young by comparison

“What?” Her eyes stayed fixed on the dark creature. “It remembers the Moonborn.” The ship fell silent. Even the ocean suddenly felt colder. Gabriel’s expression hardened. “What exactly is that thing?” Lyra answered quietly. “A Hollow.” The name alone sounded wrong. Ancient. Dangerous. Trevor slowly raised his hand. “I don’t like the name already.” “Nobody asked,” Cassian muttered. Lyra stepped closer to the ship edge carefully. “The Hollows were created during the first Moonborn war.”
