House Of Night BY P.C. CAST AND KRISTIN CAST Hogwarts for vampires? Yes, Harry Potter had his wizard school, but there are at least two series that give vampire teens their own school. First up: The House of Night series, six books written by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast, a mother-and-daughter team from Tulsa, Okla. Marked, Betrayed, Chosen, Untamed, Hunted and Tempted. Vampires are chosen almost randomly, and they have to enter special academies, where they go through a program and slowly change — or die. This series is quite well-done, and has a lot of goddess theology and ritual in it.

But what use was steel against something like this? The void writhed, twisting and unfurling like the tendrils of some unseen entity. The whispers grew deafening, echoing in Elior’s skull, in Sienna’s, in the very bones of the earth. And then, the voice returned. "We are the Hollow." The tendrils stretched toward them. "And now, we rise." Sienna gasped, her fingers digging into Elior’s arm. “Elior.....” The void surged forward. Elior threw himself in front of her, sword raised.

“You sealed the Hollow.” Autumn inclined her head. “I did.” The revenant on her left spoke next, their lips cracked and blue with cold. “At a price.” “Yes.” “The Book?” “Gone.” “Your soul?” Autumn hesitated, then forced the truth. “…Intact. But changed.” A long silence followed, broken only by the creak of the ruined rafters. The Council’s psychic leaned forward, pale blue gaze like ice water poured over her skin. “We have not seen the threads realign since the First Sundering,” they whispered. “The Hollow is closed… but something new was born.”

She was not sure if it was just a change, having a friend outside the supernatural world or it was something more. When Holly woke up that morning, she saw Elizabeth and Tessa returning from their walk. A broad smile spread across her face, but it vanished as quickly as it had appeared when her excitement was overshadowed by concern. Elizabeth came from a world of supernatural and no matter what, she was going to have to return to that world. Holly just feared for the heart break that Elizabeth was going to have, and she resolved to talk to Elizabeth about that.

Convel’s POV This is the day every werewolf in our pack is waiting for; the festival of the red blood moon that only happens once every 10 years. Blood moon appears to be the werewolves’ source of strength during the great war centuries ago. “Convel!” I follow the voice, and it leads me to one of our dungeon guards. “Do we have any problem?” I take a quick look at the entrance of the dungeon, worrying if something happened. “Nothing happened, but the prisoner screamed so loud last night.”

Women haul buckets of water from the cracked well. Men sharpen blades, preparing for a war not yet on our horizons. But just in case. That’s the rhythm of our lives: scrape by, prepare, repeat. The Hollow isn’t beautiful nor entirely safe, by safety standards. But who gives safety standards though? Lycan’s Hollow is real. Although I think it is high time the council changes its name.

“ The next game is called the game of Echoes.” Luke announced, standing on the makeshift ring where the five used to practice fighting. “Each competitor will go through the East portal which leads to the world of the hollows. For the sake of those who do not know,” he continued. “ Hollows are phantoms that can see guilt, pain, rage, jealousy, and envy. They can also materialize into your greatest fears, your deepest desires and the things that haunt you when you sleep.
