He glanced up at me again.
For a fraction of a second, something else passed through his eyes.
Not jokey bravado.
Not terror.
Resolve.
He knew what this was.
He knew what the game wanted: spectacle, guilt, trauma. A neat little morality play where the scrappy young one killed the older, beloved ally or vice versa, and my face was onscreen the entire time, forced to watch.
He also knew, with unnerving accuracy, that I was currently calculating ten thousand impossible edits to try and stop it and that if I tried, the Game would crush me harder.
