The Lazarus Effect Novel Novels & Stories

“The Book of Kings.” Azazel nods, “At first, we weren’t sure what we’d find. Because not only is it in Latin, but the scriptures are quite involved.” He scrolls through the book and opens it to a specific page. “Then we saw this, Pestifer Mundi, the destroyer of worlds. At first, it discusses the plagues, but as we continued to read, we found information about Lana.”

The old man looked into her palms keenly for another full minute, his eyes widening like they were about to pop right out of their sockets. Yolanda and Charles had exchanged puzzled looks for the umpteenth time, trying to figure out what was happening. Suddenly, the old man began to mumble words that made no sense to the young man and woman seated before him. "I can see very dark spirits inside of you. I can see a__werewolf," He paused and looked closer. "There's a woman obscuring my view of your future. She's standing before a door. It looks like she is trying to keep it closed."

And they couldn’t know why some people got sick while the others didn’t. But they said, there was something about it that changed the rational part of your mind and highlighted your instinct. It turned them all into mindless animals who try to satisfy their primal urges only. Supernatural zombies were the biggest threat, though. If you met an undead wolf, just run, don’t try to fight it. If you met a dragon, you might just kill yourself and be done with it. You won’t survive this encounter. One of the wolves charged at me and I sidestepped it, a second tried to bite my thigh and it almost succeeded.

Zara The air that hit me as Zarek wrenched open that damned trap door was thick with dust. My lungs burned as if I’d been clawing against stone for hours, though I knew it hadn’t been that long. My palms still tingled from pounding against the sealed barrier, my throat raw from shouting at Seraphine, Lira, and Nova to open up before the memory had slammed into me like a dagger between the ribs. I didn’t want Zarek to see that part—the way my knees had gone weak, the way I’d pressed my forehead against the cold wood when fragments of Atlas and I had surfaced.

He crushed his cigarette out roughly against her image. “This celebration may well be the greatest wedding of the century, Liora… but do not forget: Lazarus has always found a way to rise again from the dead.” END OF CHAPTER 208

"Oh. Um, thanks?" "I'm serious," she said, like I'd sounded doubtful, which I suppose I had. "You've got this whole quiet, mysterious thing going on. It's very intriguing." "I just don't talk much, I guess." "See, that's exactly what a mysterious person would say." The girl on her left grinned around a mouthful of fries, unbothered by her own joke, and stuck her hand out across the table. "I'm Zanele. This is Priya, obviously, and that's Beth."

At the door, she took the heavy case. She returned to the living room. Cross-legged, she sank into the leather sofa. The case was opened with clinical precision. A yellowed experiment dossier lay quietly on the shock-absorbent mat. It was the fragmented core document of the “Lazarus” project. Beside it, a cold-metallic USB drive, sealed with the Alexander family’s first-tier commercial keys. Her eyes skimmed the dossier with precision. The pages detailed massive computing architectures interfacing with biochemical neural cores. A short, knowing laugh escaped her.

It contained a single book. “Woah! This is crazy,” Roger whispered. Lazarus walked up to the book, it was in a glass protective casing. “You didn’t know this was here, did you?” Velma asked. “No, I didn’t,” he clarified. Lazarus inspected the book. “What is it?” Nigel demanded. “It’s so beautiful,” Clarke admired. Lazarus gulped when he realized what it was. “It’s the Book of The God’s.”

What did you give me? "A serum I've spent fifteen years working on," Lazarus said. "Enhanced cell growth. Pain augmentation. Retention of rage. You are no longer a man, Sebastian. You're a goddamn machine." Sebastian's laughter turned to a cough, blood spewing. "Kill me, then." Lazarus leaned in closer. "Not yet. They are waiting. Planning. We must attack when it will hurt the most." Sebastian's eyes went cold. "They took everything from me."

E beneath it, in red ink: Project Lazarus. My stomach twisted. Lazarus. The man they say rose from the dead. But who brought him back? I snapped the folder shut. “We go now. I want answers. I want her safe. And I want the Morettis to feel what it’s like to have their pulse crushed in a velvet glove.” Matteo grinned, all teeth and shadows. “Now that’s the Serena I fell for.” Nico
