The Lost Heir
Eleven people in a room that felt smaller than it was — council members on one side, Nix and Dylan on the far bench, Maya beside Alec with her reading glasses still on from the cabin.
He told them what the journal was. He told them the name on the inside cover. He told them the age of it — the dates in the first entries, the math that put the writer in 1870s America, the math that put him alive and hunting their daughter now.
The room absorbed that.
"Read it," Soren said.
Alec opened the journal to the second entry. He read it the way Vargr wrote it — without ceremony, without inflection, just the words.
