Silence followed, thick and heavy. My heart pounded, but I held their gazes. Finally, the leader tucked the envelope into his coat. “We will play your game, human. But remember, we serve no one. If this wolf of yours proves more interesting than you…” His grin widened, sharp as teeth. “…we might just choose him over you.”
A chill ran through me, but I forced a laugh. “Fair enough. Just make sure he bleeds a little first.”
