My family believed in democracy. Every decision was settled by a family vote. Dad, Mom, my brother Dylan Conley, and my sister Tessa Conley each got one vote. So did I. He looked down at him with a cold indifference. “I was the one who ordered my men not to open the doors for you,” Raguel stated, his voice ringing with authority. “Omar Romano, what are you doing here?” Omar Romano? My breath caught. This was the Mayor of the city. The man I had seen on the evening news a dozen times, the man who held the keys to the city. And here he was, quivering like a scolded child in front of Raguel. Then, something clicked in my head and suddenly, I knew. I didn’t know how I knew, but as I looked at the Mayor, I could see the same predatory hum beneath his skin that I felt from Raguel. He was one of them.

Dustin looked up and shouted. “You don’t have any right to argue!” the mayor said coldly. “Mr. Mayor, you don’t have the right to give orders here,” Dustin said icily. “I’m a sixth tier official! Why wouldn’t I have the right to give orders?” scoffed the mayor. “Because… you’re not Rivenesco’s mayor anymore,” Dustin said evenly. “What a joke!” The mayor looked at him mockingly. “Do you think it’ll become true just because you say it? Do you really think you can remove me from my post?”

I am so lost. I don't even know what to feel now. Disappointment? Confusion? Agitated? Mad? Annoyed? I don't know, everything is confusing me. Even Ismaiah is confusing me! "What news?" The mayor is a handsome man, in his 40s, I can tell by his physical appearance that he takes good care of himself, but my eyes see only one man. I should advise him that it is better to watch out for his eyes. If he kept looking at me like that, he'd never look at anything again. “Mayor Hudson,” I hear the firm voice behind me and the hairs on my body stand on end in response. "Good night, Cosmo" he replies and I see the younger version of the mayor appear at his side "This is Andrew, my son" I smile politely in greeting, but I want to jump on top of Cosmo and drag him into a dark corner .

Darren said suddenly, cutting between us. He took my hand and pulled me onto the floor before I could protest. A slow jazz number was playing, all elegance and pretense, and Darren slid his arm around my waist without hesitation. “You okay?” he asked, his voice quiet. I nodded. “The mayor—he’s not just fishing, is he?” “No,” Darren said. “He wants you.” My breath caught. “Not just you,” Darren added. “He wants your presence. Your attachment to me. Your place in my legacy.”

We only see each other faces. “Sure thing, Mayor Romanov.” I couldn't wait longer for him to kiss me, so I seized the first move. To reach his rosy lips, I wrapped my hands around his neck and pulled myself up. When our faces have already been on the same level, Lucas mouth half opened in awe. He became motionless like the statue when he listened to what I often called him before as his long-time occupation. It was Mayor Romanov. That's it. I seem to have forgotten I have an extraordinary call sign for him. Certainly, I don't have to use the awkward call sign anymore. The word Mayor was enough for him to have butterflies in his stomach. I could see that in his unforeseen reaction right now.
