The city glow hit the planes of his jaw, making him look like he’d been carved out of the night itself. “Call me Midnight,” he said. His voice was low, carrying a weight that made her skin prickle. “And I know exactly who you are, Lila. I know you touch yourself every night. I know you lie here imagining a stranger who comes in and tells you what to do. I know what you crave when nobody is looking.” He leaned against the wall, his gaze dropping from her face to the glistening toy still inside her. His eyes didn’t waver. I look towards Lily and she nods her head at me, “yes, let’s go.” The four of us made our way to my office in silence, nobody said a word. As my office door closed Jason blurted out, "Midnight killed Hades and is the rightful ruler of the underworld!” “What?” I say, unsure of what I just heard. “It’s- it’s true,” Midnight says quietly, “I held the sword of Demoirta in my hands… and I killed him with it.” I hear Lily gasps slightly before she pulls Midnight into her arms.

And then the video cut to black. --- Five Minutes to Midnight Sonia sat on her bed, staring at the frozen screen. This wasn’t just about pretending anymore. I couldn’t help it—that tension between the three of us was palpable. Midnight stood up, and with him, the whole mood shifted. His eyes passed over me, and I felt the heat of his dominant presence before he even got close. I didn’t need to move—he just came up to me and, in one swift motion, pulled me off Gutemberg’s lap. "Oh." "Hey!" Gutemberg protested. "We’re going to bed," Midnight said, his voice so cold it made me swallow hard. Gutemberg, however, didn’t like it one bit. He grimaced and cursed under his breath.

I could feel his suspicion even before I dared to look up at him again. He knew I was keeping something from him… only he didn't know what. Andre had always been able to tell when I was lying, and I was lying now, even if technically it was only half a lie. I couldn't very well tell him that those random messages I was receiving told me to go out to the peer at midnight and search for answers. “Air,” he repeated quietly, his voice flat but with an edge to his tone that said he didn't believe me. “You went out at midnight in the middle of a pier just so you could receive air?”
