Chapter 5: The Kiss That Ruined Everything The gym was loud and active. Music blasted through the big speakers as Zach’s team and friends were celebrating, he had just won his underground fight with a brutal knockout. Bottles of whiskey and beer flowed freely. Everyone was happy, laughing and cheering. Zach stood in the middle of it all in his usual element… shirtless, sweat dropping on his sculpted body, looking big and powerful under the bright lights as he accepted congratulations. Noah stood near the back of the crowd, nursing a drink while watching his best friend with a strange mix of pride and something deeper. A strange, heavy feeling that had been growing for weeks now

“It’s too late. They’ve already reached the front.” All four of them; my parents and his, held hands in a wobbly circle, moving with more enthusiasm than rhythm. Dad stepped too far left at one point and bumped into Milo’s mom, who laughed and accidentally swayed into my mom. It was chaotic. Embarrassing. Absolutely precious. I snorted. “This is tragic.” “It’s art,” Milo countered, eyes sparkling. The music picked up into a lively country tune. Faye’s boots tapped against the wooden floor, her voice smooth and warm as she sang about young love and long summers and riverside memories.

We’d used that money to bribe Hank’s older brother into getting us a twelve-pack of beer. Our music wasn’t as raw as it was back then, but what it lacked in crude sound it more than made up for in power. Every note we hit that night had the force of a sucker punch. We didn’t merely play those songs for the crowd; we attacked them, ripping into them like wild animals. We’d starved for weeks in that studio, and now we’d have our nourishment. ‘Gypsy’ transitioned into ‘Dim Carcosa’, and during Hank’s bass-driven lead up, Johnny held out his hand to the crowd.

Why make it sound like I was just a stressed student instead of the girl who practically threw herself at him in his car? Inside the event, the lights are dimmed just right, casting a soft glow over everything. The music playing is one of my favorite songs. It’s slow, sultry R&B with a nice beat. What a coincidence. My phone buzzes in my clutch. I pull it out. [Shane: Do you like the music?] I look around and spot him right behind the DJ booth. He waves at me with that easy, warm smile. I text back quickly. [Me: Yes. Now stop forcing everybody to listen to boring music and change it.]

I saw some of the girls from school and a few boys too, holding red plastic cups. The game was simple. Drink the gin, flip the cup, laugh. Lose? Drink again. And again. I laughed so hard I almost choked on my second drink. Freckles slammed her cup and flipped it perfectly. “That’s how you do it!” Jace, standing beside her, clapped slowly. “You cheat. That’s the only explanation.” Freckles shoved him. “You’re just bad at it.” They kept teasing each other. I laughed and drank again, feeling the gin hit my stomach like heat. After the game, the music changed. A heavy beat filled the house. Everyone started to scream and run toward the dance stage.

“If I were with you now? I would kiss every inch of your body and slowly, slowly made my way down to that sweet spot between your legs. Every time my lips draw a shiver from you I would linger on that spot. Then, once I’ve made my way down to paradise, I would make sure to savor every sensation. Drink in your scent, take with me as much of that juice as I possibly can. Oh I would eat you… like a ripe peach.” Her breathe hitched as she shivered violently. Her toes curled up, her eyes rolled back, her nipples peaked up as the words rung in her head, “eat you like a ripe peach.” She really couldn’t hold herself back from moaning out in pleasure. He let out a soft, dark laugh that made her toes

“Aye, a few towns over, down in one of the valleys. Heatherland Falls, I believe, is where it was held. Juniper Grove is one of the last settlements with a hotel before you have to drop down in the valleys again to reach the Roguelands and the border. The storm, I’m telling’ you, it’s worse out there than I’ve ever seen it. Everyone passing through has no choice but to bunker down for the night, including this hellish band.” I smile around the rim of my glass. He’s not wrong. The music is exactly what I like and has an effect on the crowd I’d expect at a concert venue deep in the city center of the neighboring capital. Instead of replying again she just smiled and opened the stereo to play music. We both suddenly stop and just listen to the song playing making the atmosphere uncomfortable and thick. I sighed and got up to bring soup for him from the kitchen where Greta had kept earlier. Suddenly, loud music shot through the house, blasting from the huge speakers in the living room and I danced in mirth. Finally, Clark was doing something and I must say, I thought he had an outrageous taste in music compared to his sad character. I swayed my hips and sang along the lyrics of 'Anaconda' by Nicki Minaj. I laughed and poured the soup in a bowl when suddenly the music switched to 'Total eclipse of the heart.' Perplexed by the sudden change, I carried the bowl containing the soup to the living room.

I texted my sister 'Penguin' and threw my phone to the trash can "I want to hear pop music , do you guys mind?" I asked the guards and the staff. They all shook her head immediately. I took out my speaker and turned a really loud pop music "Let's start , shall we?" I saw a bunch of guys walk to his car , I need to make this fast
