The novel reads more like a private memoir being shared; there's more backstory about why letters never reached Allie, more detail about family pressure, and a steadier build into the heartbreak. The movie turns some of that exposition into dramatic beats and visuals, which ramps up the melodrama. Also, the portrayal of older Allie's memory loss feels more explicit and central in the film, while the book spreads the emotional weight across more scenes and reflective passages. If you want atmosphere and inner life, the book delivers; if you want the instantaneous gut-punch of a scene, the movie nails it.
