By 8:56 AM, Hope finally emerged.
I glanced her over, relieved that at least she didn’t look as wretched as she had weeks ago. Her clothes were clean, well-fitted, and her hair, though slightly disheveled, was passable. My gaze unconsciously dropped to her stomach, where my so-called children grew.
It was baffling, really. That something as powerful as life could take root in such a small space.
“Get in.” My voice was clipped as I yanked open the car door, slipping inside before slamming it shut behind me.
