I quietly sat on her bamboo bed and looked at her. “I love you so much, Nanay. I’m doing this for you.” I bent down to kiss her but something caught my eye—something under her pillow. I carefully pulled it out, making sure not to wake her. It was a large brown envelope. I opened it and saw a blue plastic folder and several documents inside. I went to the kitchen for more light and looked through the papers one by one. At first, I didn’t understand what I was reading. But then I opened one envelope—and my hand flew to my mouth.

I’m hardly ten minutes away from Daisy and I’m already feeling it—that ice-cold, feral focus that comes over me when I need to get something important done. And right now, nothing could be more important than rescuing Daisy’s mother. The Palace, as Matt calls it, is a hideout mansion like something out of Scarface. It looks like a house a frat boy would buy if he suddenly woke up with a hundred million dollars. Gaudy, tasteless, and if I remember right, registered to some shell company owned by Matt that he does business through.

"You spilled some water." I gently pushed him back onto the pillows and stood up. I began opening drawers in his bedside console, looking for a handkerchief or a towel. The furniture was uncovered and buried under what looked like years of accumulated dust and cobwebs. She ran through the house, screaming her daughter’s name but the only response she got was the echo of her voice. She became desperate as she kicked doors open, checking the rooms but finding them empty. “What kind of sick joke is this?” She wailed in frustration. “Who is doing this to me?” “Emilia, you might want to see this,” said Matt in the kitchen. She went to meet him and found him staring at a piece of paper that looked too clean to be a part of this dirty house.

The snare of untruths is being turned and one whirlwind could annihilate it. We continue through the exquisite lobby and afterward through the swinging doors into the huge room we initially entered. It appears to be unique now, with a tad of light drifting through the windows and the little candles consuming brilliantly. I can see the enumerating of the plan and furniture, all with a dated feel to it. Having the option to see a greater amount of the palace, nonetheless, doesn't cause me to have a solid sense of reassurance or even gladly receive it. Also, even as we leave the palace, I get the little, shocking inclination that we are being watched.
