Pierce looked at me like he was hoping for something, and when I didn't give him anything, a kind of defeated weight settled over his face.
Then, like he couldn't stop himself, he glanced over at Preston. His expression shifted again, back to something harder.
"Nice dinner," he said. "Must've cost him a lot."
He nodded at the box in my hand. "That thing in there, by the way." He paused, making sure I was listening. "That's from Maison Birks. Limited edition. The set retails for around a hundred and forty thousand."
Another pause, longer this time, pointed. "Bet your athlete over there couldn't cover that on a whole year's salary."
