I don’t know what to make out of it. “ Words are not enough, I know. Nothing can be fixed with a sorry, I told this to you before too. But I promise…” He pauses to take a deep breath, his eyes holding mine captive. “ I promise I will never hurt you again. I promise I will do my best to make you happy. ” Each word feels like a soothing balm to all the old wounds, healing everything inside me slowly. It’s not enough like he said, but I am sure he will keep his promise and all I ever want is happiness now.

I stammered, feeling sad about it. “But if you want, if you really want, you can leave this life behind and start a new one with me, and I promise you that you will be the happiest woman in this fucking world. I will take care of making you happy for the rest of your days. Just let me make this promise to you, and you will never cry from sadness again, but only from happiness,” he said with such expression that it was almost impossible for my heart not to melt with love for him.

“You can achieve everything you set out to achieve.” He paused. “But if there’s no room left in that life for happiness…” A quiet breath left him. “Then what exactly are you building it for?” I didn’t answer. After a moment, he looked back at me. “Promise me something,” he said. I lifted a brow slightly. “What is it?” A small smile touched his lips. “When happiness comes knocking again…” He paused once more. “Don’t refuse to answer the door.” I looked down at my hands and smiled despite myself, shaking my head lightly.

Not a greeting. A promise.
