For eighteen years, my wife, Elizabeth Connerty, never once reached out to her first love, Lucas Ryder. She committed herself fully to me and cooked warm meals for me. She attended every parent-teacher conference for our daughter. She carefully planned our family trips year after year. That was how we lived—quietly, steadily, and happily—for eighteen years. But after our daughter celebrated her eighteenth birthday, I turned to Elizabeth and said, "Let's get a divorce." She stood in the doorway of our daughter's bedroom, staring at me in stunned silence. I added calmly, "When our daughter was born, you promised me that once she turned eighteen, we would divorce."

Despite the pain and heartbreak, I believed that happiness could find its way back into our lives. Cradling my son in my arms, feeling his tiny heartbeat against my chest, I made a solemn promise. Promises, that's what I was afraid of. And he just promised me a future, gave me a hope. Promises are made to be broken. Thats what always happens. I know it very well yet I couldn't help but let myself believe in him. That's the very first promise he made to me. I so much want to create a future with him, where I could be happy.

I don’t know what to make out of it. “ Words are not enough, I know. Nothing can be fixed with a sorry, I told this to you before too. But I promise…” He pauses to take a deep breath, his eyes holding mine captive. “ I promise I will never hurt you again. I promise I will do my best to make you happy. ” Each word feels like a soothing balm to all the old wounds, healing everything inside me slowly. It’s not enough like he said, but I am sure he will keep his promise and all I ever want is happiness now.

I stammered, feeling sad about it. “But if you want, if you really want, you can leave this life behind and start a new one with me, and I promise you that you will be the happiest woman in this fucking world. I will take care of making you happy for the rest of your days. Just let me make this promise to you, and you will never cry from sadness again, but only from happiness,” he said with such expression that it was almost impossible for my heart not to melt with love for him.

“You can achieve everything you set out to achieve.” He paused. “But if there’s no room left in that life for happiness…” A quiet breath left him. “Then what exactly are you building it for?” I didn’t answer. After a moment, he looked back at me. “Promise me something,” he said. I lifted a brow slightly. “What is it?” A small smile touched his lips. “When happiness comes knocking again…” He paused once more. “Don’t refuse to answer the door.” I looked down at my hands and smiled despite myself, shaking my head lightly.

Not a greeting. A promise.
