The silence in the excavation trench was absolute, broken only by the heavy, rhythmic breathing of the two hundred scrapper rebels who had slowly begun to creep forward from the granite ledges. Their grease-stained faces were completely illuminated by the violet glow radiating from my daughter’s skin, their expressions a mixture of raw terror and a wild, un-regulated reverence. They had seen the Spires dark, but seeing three six-story mining titans turned into frozen, shattered scrap in less than three seconds was a language that every mud-dweller understood.

She snatched the hem of my coat and declared, "This coat is warm, so Toby can use it!" She was trying to strip it off me! "Let go!" I desperately struggled, kicking out at her wrist with my boot. "Ow! She kicked me, Mason! She's attacking me!" Pamela screeched like a slaughtered pig. "She pinched Toby earlier, and now she's hitting me!" In truth, Toby wasn't hurt at all, but he was clever enough to clutch his stomach and howl dramatically. "Ow, my tummy hurts! Raine kicked my tummy!"

As for Irene and Pierre, Hades waved his hand in the air, and suddenly, a red cross appeared on both of their names in the Book of Life. "This is what they brought onto themselves. They deserved it!" One of the guards shouts, voice sharp and urgent. The noise outside seeps in, screams, shattering glass, chaos. I don’t slow. I burst out of the doors into a scene from hell. Flames licking up the driveway, overturned vehicles, my guards and some of the betas and gammas locked in combat with a wave of young rebels; boys and girls with plaques, fury, and confusion in their eyes. Some are leaping over the stone fence, teeth bared, transformed already. Rage coils sharply in my chest.

"They're looking at Sierra like she's the threat." I stood slowly, blade dripping at my side, the weight of their stares pressing down. A brown furred wolf from Isaak's pack whimpered, backing away as another rock tumbled from the hill above, courtesy of the tremor that still lingered in the ground. The elemental power hummed, unpredictable, and I clenched my fists to contain it, but sparks of energy crackled along my skin, visible even in the dim light. The rebels sensed the fracture. A group of them, led by a scarred black wolf, charged forward, taking advantage of the hesitation. Fangs sank into the flank of a distracted ally, claws raking bellies open in sprays of blood.

“Get up.” Lily’s breath caught. From the look in Rebel’s eyes, he wouldn’t hesitate to use the man’s blade to kill him. Clint cried. “Rebel, please. My ribs. I can’t—” “I said, get up,” Rebel growled. The cold anger in his eyes flared. Clint’s friend stepped forward to help him, but Rebel’s eyes barely flicked toward him before the wolf stopped in his tracks. “Don’t play the hero,” he warned. “Heroes die violent deaths around these parts.”

“Selene’s. The pack’s. My own. The world will still throw ropes. I just… do not tie them into knots for it anymore.” Rhea’s eyes glinted. “Poet,” she said. “Queen,” Luna corrected, mock-offended. “Same thing,” Rhea said. Luna laughed. A shout from the courtyard drew their attention. Rebel barreled into view, hair half-braided, shirt misbuttoned, waving a scroll. “Luna!” he yelled. “You have to see this.” Rhea groaned. “Can it wait until after breakfast?” she called. “Or after never?”
