But he couldn't help but feel a sense of dread in the pit of his stomach, knowing that his life was about to change forever. As I sat in the midwife's hut, I couldn't help but feel nervous. I had been taking herbs to hide my pregnancy from Liam's pack, but now that I was here, I knew I had to be honest about everything. The midwife, an old woman named Ana, took my hand and looked into my eyes. "My child, you have nothing to fear. Whatever happens, we will face it together," she said in a reassuring voice. "I'm here, my love. I'm here." Her fingers locked down over my fingers, surprisingly strong in a clasp. "It…hurts," she confessed, shaking voice. The midwife, a wise, sharp-eyed older woman, moved with a quiet efficiency, issuing quiet orders to her attendants clustering about her. "Breathe, my lady," she instructed, "you're getting on beautifully."

I whispered, my voice barely audible. He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he handed me the note. The words were printed in bold letters: Secrets don’t stay buried forever. Tick-tock. A cold sweat broke out on my skin. "What does this mean?" "It’s a warning," Elias said grimly. "Whoever sent this knows something—and they're using it against us." Panic surged through me. Without asking for paperwork or money, she immediately grabbed my arm and led me down a narrow corridor into a small, plain room in the back. There was a metal cot, a single wooden stool, and the sharp, clean smell of antiseptic.
