After Peter sent three big gifts, Sadie said yes, excited. She told him they could meet at the music festival at the end of the month, where she was studying at the music academy. I got a chill, feeling like something bad was going to happen. A popularity list came out before the music festival. Carl was third, and his girlfriend Sadie, known for her beauty and sweet voice, was second. The top spot went to Hank Morgan, a star student from Future Tech University. I was fourth. People were curious to see me, the girl with the not-so-pretty face, without any tricks to hide behind.

However, the book didn’t fully come out of the shelf—it extended halfway, and then a loud click came from behind it.

Christina gave her a look that said she was either testing her or trying to decide how much to say. “This,” she said at last, “is why you’ve been dodging mustard jackets and cleaning up after dead archaeologists.” Leila’s heart skipped a beat. She sat down, sliding the book toward her. It was heavier than it looked, its weight a promise of bad news. “Oh my! Explain,” she said, flipping it open.
