The Alpha King's Shadow
Like a wrong note in a song, it hung in the air, hunted by unseen nostrils.
Head bowed low, Selene carried water jugs across the lower hall, trying to blend into the background. The clatter of armor echoed from somewhere above, each clang a punch to her gut. Every time she heard the heavy thud of boots, her stomach clenched. The King had loosed his wolves. Not the four-legged kind with fur and fangs, but men - men trained to be shadows themselves. Silent, deadly, and always watching.
She'd seen them once before, years ago, when the curse first twisted her brothers. She remembered the same cold way, the same unnerving silence before things turned bloody; the same feeling.
