The trench coat the stranger is wearing is dirty with splattered mud on it, I glance at his shoes seeing more mud as I frown, the driver starts the car persuading the journey. When I glance at the face of the stranger casually only to see his eyes shining golden in colour. I know who’s eyes shine gold and I know this stranger is no human but a beast who hunts in packs. My face turned pale in fear seeing a smirk plastering on his face. I know he knows who I am and he knows I figured out who he is. I gulp visibly not breaking the eye contact with him. “Let me go”, I tell him sternly to which he raises his eyebrows amused.

Now the world felt like it had cracked open just slightly—enough to let something unfamiliar seep in. Crystal sat on the low stone wall near the marketplace, legs swinging back and forth as she watched the village buzz with activity. Drums echoed faintly from the square. Vendors shouted prices. Children ran past her in clouds of dust and laughter. And there he was again. The daddy stranger. He stood near the elders, tall and unmistakable, his presence commanding without him trying. His clothes were too clean for the village, his posture too straight. He listened more than he spoke, but when he did speak, people leaned in.

But exhaustion was settling into my bones, a deep heaviness that came after too many close calls and too many moments where my daughter’s life hung by a thread.
