the stranger growled, his voice low and dangerous.
"I—I didn’t—" the man stammered, but he didn’t get a chance to finish. The stranger moved so quickly that I barely saw it happen. One moment, the greasy-haired man was standing there, and the next, he was crumpled on the floor, clutching his stomach and groaning in pain.
The stranger turned back to me, extending a hand. "Come on."
I stared at him, my heart pounding. "Why should I trust you?"
His gaze softened, and for the first time, I saw a flicker of something human in his eyes. "Because I’m the only chance you have right now."
