The Survivors Jane Harper Novels & Stories

Declan shot forward again, to play the hero who saves the damsel. “Why are you defending this freak?” he lashed out. Jace stepped forward. He looked ready to throw a punch. I tugged at his arm to pull him back. “She’s not a freak. Her name is Harper and she lives here,” he answered. I stared at him, astounded. Was Jace defending me? In front of everyone? Reagan looked pissed. She seemed relaxed that her little play had been ruined. She dropped the act and stepped closer. “Jace, you can’t let this freak bewitched you, just like her mom did her stepfather" she blurted.

From the moment she decided to abandon that child, the child no longer had much to do with her. If she wanted to live the life of her dreams, she had to harden her heart. "What about the child?" Hugh inquired, his curiosity piqued by this previously untold part of Harper's story. Of course, Harper wouldn't tell the truth. So, she put on a sorrowful expression and said, "The child… didn't survive the earthquake…" Hugh refrained from probing further. "I'm sorry, Hugh! I never intended to deceive you. I was merely terrified of losing you… Throughout my time abroad, you and everything about us was all I could think of!" Harper's grip on Hugh's hands tightened as she spoke.

he replied, lifting his pass. Her stomach twisted. By who? He stepped closer. “You still think you’re the only one who wants to save the world?” “No,” she said. “But I’m one of the few who didn’t sell it first.” While Sophie handled Daxton, Rachel was in the private surveillance suite reviewing live feeds. She zoomed in on the media platform’s satellite login. One name stood out. Lillian Harper. She’d tried to log into a secure stream. Blocked — but detected.

“And just because another maid saved you today does not automatically mean she is completely innocent either. You cannot trust people too easily, Avery.” I understood their concern completely, but deep down, I genuinely believed Janet would never hurt me. “I agree with Charlotte too,” Ivy chimed in softly. Before I could respond, Harper suddenly let out a loud terrified yelp that startled all of us instantly. I immediately turned toward her in confusion. Her face had gone completely pale. Slowly, she raised her phone toward me with trembling hands. The moment my eyes landed on the caller ID, my own heart nearly stopped beating. BEN.

— “Emma!” Someone shook my shoulder hard. I gasped and sat up, heart slamming against my ribs. For several seconds I couldn’t breathe. Lily stood beside the bed, staring at me. Lily. She had died in the first year of the apocalypse. I had held her hand while the light left her eyes. But she was here. Alive. “Lily?” “Yeah? What’s wrong with you? You were screaming.” I grabbed her hand. Warm. Real. I reached for my phone with shaking fingers.

CHAPTER 77 ELEC The first time I heard Harper's name that morning, I almost laughed. I was standing in the main hall of Gerald Packhouse, going through reports with two warriors, when I heard someone whisper that she was alive and that Alpha Pedro of Nightfall was protecting her. I looked up so sharply that both warriors went silent, but the idea was so ridiculous that I quickly shook my head. Harper had been abandoned with nothing, in the cold, after being rejected and sent away, and there was no way a woman like her could have crossed the distance to Nightfall and somehow ended up under the protection of one of the most powerful Alphas in the world.

“Some of us didn’t survive the separation.” “One girl collapsed in front of us,” she said softly. “Her wolf left first. She followed soon after.” Silence crushed the room. “I survived,” Jane finished. “Not because I was strong. Just lucky.” She stepped back, shoulders sagging. My mother rose and crossed the room, placing her hands over Jane’s trembling ones. “You will never be touched like that here,” she said, voice shaking. “Not while I draw breath.” They break their own, Dallas snarled.

I thought about my father and brother from time to time, and wondered what would have happened if they survived it all. Would we have found peace? Would Ava and I have lived happily? I knew the answers, but it was still too painful to admit out loud that I believed that my own family never really loved me. Then there was Harper who thought she could just walk right in and take over. Her parents were sadly killed and I could only guess that it happened when Harper took over. So many lives had been lost unnecessarily. So many loved ones given up because someone thought two people should not be together. I watched my incredible wife laughing with her grandmother, and I was so happy that she was

I swipe away the notifications of many missed calls and texts from Bella until I see the new automated home security notification from the mansion. I swipe the screen open. The live feed shows the backyard pool area, drenched in blinding, pristine afternoon sunlight. Harper is there. She’s floating on a white inflatable lounger, wearing a pastel orange bikini that highlights the soft, unmistakable curve of her growing belly. Her smooth skin seems to glow under the sun. I stand in a literal dungeon of grime and agony, watching her move peacefully through the water on a five-inch screen. She may hate me for eternity for locking her away in that gilded cage. She can call me a monster, a captor,

I forgot what it was like to function without alcohol and honestly, without Declan, the pack could have been a whole mess. Back then, it was like the will to live have eluded me, sounded like some fantasy that I could never live. And then on one of those nights when I was particularly drunk in the pack in the bar, I saw Harper… she used to have a mate that physically abused her, and that night she killed him and she was here to drink her sorrows one final time before she ended it all. We were like two sides of the same coin, two fragments of one soul that found each other that night.
