“Just… holding back. Maybe there’s more to the story. Maybe he’s protecting himself.”
“Or you,” Ace said.
“Maybe.” I rubbed my temples, feeling the beginnings of a headache. “He said he was trying to protect me from pain. But how is that supposed to help me? I can’t move on from something I don’t understand.”
Ace didn’t respond right away. He just watched me, his gaze thoughtful. Then he turned and flipped the burner off before moving closer.
“You know,” he said softly, “you don’t owe anyone your trust. Not even him. If something doesn’t feel right, you listen to that.”
