The first sound that wasn’t mine in longer than their bloodline had existed, and it scoured every tender place the silence had made.

Even Cassius seems startled by the strange voice I just invented on the spot. Berry suddenly freezes, then he colors slightly. "My apologies, Ms . . ." "Nicki," I reply in that obscure voice. The chamber shook as the Void's voice bellowed. "What a dumb girl! Do you think you can defeat me? I am immortal!" With every muscle in my body screaming in protest, I lifted the blade. Even though the pain was excruciating, I had to continue. "You’re wrong," I responded, my voice shaking but determined. "You’re nothing."

He opened his mouth to roar, to call his guards to kill me, to scream his defiance at the sky. But nothing came out. Damon’s mouth moved, his throat worked, his chest heaved with effort, but the only sound was the whistling of the wind. I hadn't just silenced him; I had stripped the "concept" of his voice from his body. I had reached into the atoms of his vocal cords and rewritten them into silence.

The Voice had become her constant companion. The Voice had whispered beautiful things, horrible things. Told her of the past and of her future. Spoke of destiny, of rising again. You are closer to me than any of your predecessors. The Voice was asleep, but not asleep. It was imprisoned, just like Cassandra. And only Cassandra could understand the depth of dismay that oozed from every word said to her. Cassandra didn’t know anymore where her thoughts ended, and the Voice began. The Voice, a buzzing that bordered on the orgasmic for the Voudon Queen. Cassandra was as addicted to the pleasure and pain of that Voice as she was to the pharmaceuticals coursing through her veins.
