Hayden got up from his bed, then took the sword that was beside his bed. Pointing the sword at the darkened part of the room, Hayden tightened his grip. "Come out. Get out now, so I can finish you off myself.” Hayden carried a candle hanging by his bedside to light up the dark. "Oh, that's sad. You took my life, but still want to kill mine again?” answered the voice. “What- who are you?!” “You don't even recognize my voice anymore, Hayden? Or did you not recognize my voice from the start? The voice that always calls you softly and lovingly.”

When he spoke, his voice was as gentle as ever. "Get some good sleep. I'll be right here by your side." A second later, I heard his thoughts again. [Finally. Some peace and quiet.] Those were just simple words, yet they hurt deeper than any venomous insult ever could. I didn't say another word and lay silently on my side of the bed. The heavy blanket pressed down suffocatingly against my chest. Beside me, Alder tapped on his phone, as if it had all been my imagination, but I knew the truth.

But then, in the heartbeat between breaths, a voice shattered the silence, slicing through the air like an unbidden echo. "We don't know how hard you are coming, eh?" The words were a sinister melody, a chilling reminder that they were not alone in the heart of the woods. The voice seemed to materialize out of thin air, a spectral whisper that sent a shiver racing down Levi's spine. His heart quickened, the tendrils of unease wrapping around his thoughts like a vice.

I fixed my eyes just above his head, determined to project an image of unyielding stone, even as I was melting from the inside out. Then a soft voice, I couldn't hear what it said or where it came from as I was still reeling from the pain. It was a whisper, a strange auditory intrusion that was barely perceptible above the roaring in my ears and the internal agony. It was not the cold, mocking baritone of the man on the throne. This voice was gentle, a subtle presence like warm air shifting the flame, and entirely inside my head. It felt distinctly different from the trauma voice, younger, more vital, but just as impossible. I tried to focus, drawing on the last reserves of my concentration,

Sing holly, go whistle, sing ivy! Dance in the marsh and drown in the fen! It's not a question of if but when! Pierced with holly, lynched with ivy! On the last words, the voice deepened and became a guttural snarl like the growl of an enraged bear, fading into an eerie chuckle that seemed to make the boards beneath their feet shudder. Her words painted vivid images of a distant land bathed in twilight, awaiting him to defy the darkness.
