She hurled the notebook out the window. Maya’s stomach lurched as they tumbled through the air. Cold night wind slapped her face. But they didn’t hit the ground. The notebook fell open as it flew, pages expanding until they were the size of sails. The Woman jumped out behind it. They landed on the giant yellow pages, gliding over the city of London. But this was the real London. The lights glowed brighter. The air smelled of rain and cars. People moved below—real people.

And he did not trust what that did to him. The room grew quiet again. Only the sound of Aramisius picking out night robes and the fire crackled softly nearby. Then suddenly, Aeryl spoke. “Why do you keep drawing that woman?” Aramisius froze. The silence afterward changed instantly. Aeryl noticed. “The woman in the books,” she continued quietly. “The idle sketches.” No answer. Aeryl slowly sat up against the pillows now. “She looks exactly like the woman I saw that day.” Still silence. Her brows furrowed faintly.

“I want you to fire her. I don’t want her here." I exhaled, running my hand down my face before I turned to face her. She had her arms crossed and her chin lifted up defiantly as she looked at me. It was the same way she carried herself when she decided that things would go her way and I had no choice but to accept it. I had been surrounded by women like Bianca my whole life. Beautiful and privileged women who were used to having things go the way they want. I had also known, since the moment that I walked out and saw Emilia standing with her hand pressed to her cheeks, that I would not give Bianca what she wanted.

I just had not expected Emma to be the first one to act. It was a gloomy afternoon. Halfort saw its first snow of the year. I was sitting in the sunroom on the second floor and reading a book when Martha brought me hot tea. Just then, the doorbell rang. The security monitor showed Emma standing outside.
