Something alive trembled beneath the asphalt, deep, primal, vibrating through my bones. My mark pulsed against my ribs, thrumming in time with the tremor. I didn’t need to see it to know: the underworld was coming.

In order to keep the world running as it should, no one could know how it all worked. There were plenty of rumors, but no one ever bothered to find out. It didn’t matter what the Ten were… they made life good. There was never a reason to question or worry. Until one curious, stupid little boy changed everything. One child was the downfall of our world. So much was lost, perhaps forever. The Ten are scattered. Dead, sick, captive… no one knows for certain. No one… except myself, and the desperate handful of people taken into the Ten’s confidence, working to save the world.

Her hands trembled. “The seal is no longer stable.” Dax glanced at her with shock in his eyes. “You can feel that?” She nodded. “The whole sky feels… loose.” Another violent tremor shook the valley. Heavy rocks tumbled from the cliffs. Trees snapped in distant forests. The oceans far beyond the horizon roared again with unnatural tides. It almost seemed as if reality itself was being bent. The sealing fracture suddenly began to break again. This time, with terrifying speed. A massive section of the glowing lattice shattered completely and right before their eyes, white fire exploded outward across the heavens.
