Jane's Point of View ******* The silence was worse than the laughter. Far worse. The moment the woman spoke, every sound in the clearing vanished. The cracking earth. The screaming wind. The roar of silver fire. Even the creature emerging from beneath the prison seemed to pause. Listening. Waiting. My heart hammered so violently I could feel every beat through the bond. The woman stood motionless at the edge of the clearing. Watching me. Watching all of us. Her golden eyes reflected the silver fire burning across the shattered landscape, but they weren't focused on the destruction.

I watch her move still frozen and stretch out and meet that of the familiar Guard who stands in the distance. I get to my feet grabbing my basket, following after the slaves, packing each flower basket with care. I glance at the flower in my hand and place it atop the pile gently. She eyes met my own and instantly regret fell upon her own. “Rosemary , I did not mean it like that – I am just sayin –“ this time it was me who silenced her.

It shattered, shards scattering, chalk dust rising into the night. No thunder. No spirits. Only silence. The heavy, unbelieving kind. Someone laughed—small, disbelieving. The bus driver sighed impatiently. Elder Bamidele froze. Chief Eze scrambled toward the pieces, as though he could glue the years back together. Promise exhaled, a full breath for the first time in her life. She looked at Mama. Mama’s eyes met hers, tears cutting clean lines down her cheeks. “Go,” Mama whispered, her voice trembling. “Before I change my mind.”

His eyes had gone very wide and were locked on something just above my own eyes, in a place I had not been able to see for myself yet. He was looking at my eyes. He was looking at my eyes because my eyes were not the color they had been a minute ago. He went still. I went still. The yard was very quiet. Across the yard, by the low stone wall, a third person was standing. She had not been there when I had walked in. She was a small old woman in a grey apron with one hand at her throat, and her face in the lantern light was the face of a woman who had just seen something she had been told, all her life, she would not see again.

I closed my eyes, a sour feeling welling in my chest; the baby I expected would never be born. A storm was in my heart; I drove like an idiot on the street for two hours. Lightning raged; bright flashes of lightning cut across the gray sky. I don't know why I drove to slave camp A either. I stopped there for a long time; I unbuckled my parachute and got off. The scene of desolation before my eyes made me unable to help but frown a few times. Even though it was raining heavily, countless enslaved people squatted on the ground pulling weeds. Their bodies were constantly shaking, and their thin clothes were tight against them.

’ I can feel his futile attempt to resist and as I looked at this trespasser in the corner of my eye, I frowned. ‘Why are this bastard’s eyes like this, like he was abandoned by the world?’ -End of Chapter 6 -
