I felt no satisfaction but no sympathy either. They were reaping what they had sown. Their current misery was simply the echo of yesterday's greed and malice. As for my mother-in-law, I made time to visit the care facility. The environment was peaceful with complete amenities and professional caregivers on staff. When I arrived, she sat on a bench in the courtyard, basking in the sun. She looked healthier than during her hospital stay, though her eyes still seemed somewhat vacant. Seeing me, she froze. Her fingers curled inward. She lowered her head, not daring to meet my gaze.

Chapter 8 - The Watcher “The woman was blind according to the information provided, correct?” a man in his thirties stood against a lamppost across a grocery store, a phone against his left ear as he watched Georgia through the glass wall of the store, taking a bag of goods she just paid. “Yes, you have been watching her all this time and now you are asking?” a harsh voice snapped over the phone, laced with irritation. “Of course, she’s blind! She wears a blindfold due to her disgusting eyes.”

My lips were trembling, but I didn’t let them see it. I took one step. Then another. The air felt different outside the hut. The trees looked taller. The wind quieter. I didn’t look back at first. I just kept walking. But something tugged at me. So I turned. They were both still there. Standing side by side. Watching me. I raised my hand. They waved. I turned again. Took more steps. Then I paused once more and looked back. Still waving. The last time I looked, Jemimah’s father cupped his hands around his mouth and called out to me.

Her eyes widened, filled with anger and disobedience, but she did not dare to disobey her father's orders. However, her resistance made me shiver a bit. I didn't think a young girl would have eyes like that. It was full of murderous intent and seemed to have a fire that wanted to burn the other person. I was so focused on Helen that I didn't notice Elias looking at me. He had discovered me since I appeared, and instead of exposing me, he just spoke softly. "Does that noise bother you?" As soon as he asked, Gamma and Helen's eyes turned towards me. I suddenly stepped back; somehow, I felt like I had just committed a crime and had just been discovered.

It was too toxic for me. As I walked in the woods, I could hear rustles. Today, the weather was cold which led to fog covering the path. I heard the rustles again. There was a scent I sniffled in. “Who’s there?” I said. I shift my eyes back and forth, looking for Atticus, but there's no sign of him. I don't know what the hell Mrs. Stephens is doing, but it's working. She's shouting her words, chanting them louder and louder, shaking the vile of black liquid in the air. I can actually feel the negativity being forced out of the room. Ruby’s eyelids begin to flutter, and I soon find myself looking into those beautiful chocolate-brown eyes, “Hey baby, welcome back”, I whisper. Authors note Thank god she’s going to be okay; now it's up to Maddox to tell her about the baby. Will she be happy? And what will become of Mrs King and those awful stepsons of hers? Another howl broke through the silence, closer this time. I froze, my hands curling into fists. My body wanted to run, but my legs wouldn’t move. Instead, I turned toward the sound, my head tilted slightly, like I was listening for something else. And then I saw them. Eyes. Glowing, golden eyes watching me from the shadows. I stumbled back, my heart slamming against my ribs. The eyes didn’t blink. They just stared, unflinching, like they were waiting for me to do something.

Like a shadow that doesn’t scare me. He doesn’t talk much. But when he does, it’s low and careful, like he’s afraid his voice might break something in me. It won’t. I’m not glass. I’ve been fire and ash and steel. But I’m tired of burning. Yesterday, I caught him watching me from across the yard while I helped Mama Red hang laundry. He didn’t look away when I met his eyes. Just nodded once, like he was saying I see you. I got you. I didn’t nod back. But I didn’t look away either.
