*Avina* Daphne’s fingers were digging into my windpipe, her nails drawing blood as she squeezed with a strength born of pure, unadulterated psychosis. My lungs burned, a fire spreading from my chest to my throat, and black spots began to dance like angry insects across my vision.

Simon declared as he drove. "Tell me you do not like the punishment," Daphne demanded. Simon kept mute but pouted and kept on driving. I was not sure that I wanted to know what they were taking about. I noticed a small smile on Dwayne's face. He knew what was going on. I would later come to learn just how odd the couple were. Daphne had a blood red hair that reached her shoulder and round face. She was thick and tall but in a curvy way. Even sitting, she almost towered over every one. Simon was skinny and tall with dark blond hair that he cut low.

I nod and take a sip of my scotch. “This is delicious.” Daphne sips her champagne cocktail. “How’s your scotch?” “You know, it’s missing a little something.” “Soda?” she says innocently and it makes me chuckle. “No, something sweeter.” I lean in, running my hand up her thigh. “May I?” She looks at me, unsure. “What?” “Open your thighs for me.” She glances around the room. “Don’t worry, nobody is looking.” “Um, are you sure?”

Sweat glistened my skin but my arms remained firm around Daphne. The entrance grew closer and closer but yet seemed so far, a large beam from the second floor crumbled, blocking our exit. I stopped, pulling Daphne away from the flames. Her rate quickened, her body trembling. “ We can't get out! Alex we can't…” She coughed out, the smoke choking her.

I spent the remaining hours of the nighttime laid out on the mattress, letting the shaman’s medicine work its magic, while Daphne and Enzo paced nervously around the little hut. “The veil here is thicker,” Daphne explained, her nails practically bitten down to nubs from chewing on them all night. “The place where it’s thinner is still days away if we move on foot. And who knows how much time we have left before they find our trail again? God, we never should have stopped.”
