The hallway felt too narrow as I moved through it, my mind replaying every moment with Rowan — the way he had hidden, the way he had taken the suppressants in secret, the way he had let us touch him while keeping such a big part of himself locked away.
As I turned the corner, Manuel — Dante’s favorite toy — walked past me. He was moving strangely, his steps hurried and his eyes darting around like he was nervous. Something about his behavior set off every instinct I had. I reached out, grabbed him by the front of his shirt, and slammed him against the wall hard enough to make him gasp.
“What is going on?” I demanded, my voice low and deadly. “Why are you moving like that? What do you know?”
