Serena obeyed at once. “I was wrong,” she said. Her voice was hoarse and mechanical. “I was disordered. I was selfish. I will be obedient. I will not resist.” “Again.” “I was wrong. I will be obedient.” The next clip showed her standing in a corridor with a tray balanced across both forearms, body swaying from exhaustion while an instructor corrected the angle of her shoulders with two fingers. Another showed her repeating courtesy phrases until the words blurred. Another showed her kneeling on chapel stone while a recording played nearby, forcing her to hear Lucien’s own name between commands to confess and begin again.

That is all I am now. Adrian’s voice cuts through everything then, desperate and commanding at once, ordering me to disengage. I hear him, and for a brief moment, something inside me almost obeys. But I cannot. Not this time. Not when obeying means his death. Some orders are meant to be followed, but others are meant to be broken in silence and carried to the grave. This is one of those moments. So I do not stop. I do not retreat. I hold.

A sound that would haunt them for weeks. “You want to survive this war?” I asked. “Then follow my lead. You don’t have to like me. You don’t have to trust me. You just have to fucking obey.” And one by one, they obeyed. Chins lowered. Voices silenced. Heads bowed. I didn’t smile. Didn’t smirk. Didn’t move.

“Show him you’re sincere.” “How?” The question came out as a frustrated growl. “By being obedient. Patient.” I stiffened. “Obedient? You want me to be a dog at his beck and call? To roll over and beg?” The image was so antithetical to my entire being it was physically repulsive.

He only cared about training and that angered me a lot. Why do I have to obey every one of your orders? You aren’t my boss, I only agreed to train in order to defend myself not hurt myself. And why do I have to obey the same man that brutally murdered my mother? He’s ordering me like I’m a piece of paper he can bend whenever he pleases.

Claimed. “You will not leave me,” he said, stepping closer, brushing my hair from my face. “You will not resist me openly. You will not allow your body to betray your defiance. You will obey my rules, even when you hate them. Even when it burns.” I swallowed hard, shaking my head. “I—I won’t. I can’t—” “You will,” he said simply. “Because resistance without rules only leads to chaos. And I do not tolerate chaos around me.”

David said. I obeyed with trembling hands. "Come here."
