"So what did you learn in school?" Noah puffed out his chest. "I know addition." "Oh?" "What's seven plus six?" Thomas blinked. He looked at Maxine helplessly. Maxine laughed. "You don't know?" "I know!" "Then answer." Thomas looked genuinely troubled. "Twelve?" "It's thirteen!" Noah shouted. Thomas placed his hand dramatically over his chest. "I've been defeated." Noah laughed loudly. Maxine watched the two of them. Her smile slowly softened. Thomas looked... natural with Noah.

"The Evans family really had the audacity to fool us with a fake Caroline to keep our alliance! Since they're already in jail, Caroline will have to pay for their debt with her blood!" His subordinate glanced at him. "Mr. Thomas, what should we do next?" "Tell Finn to send all his men here! Doesn't he want half of the remaining shares in my hand? I'll just hand it all to him!" The men were shocked, but they didn't know what to say. In the end, they could only agree and left. A long time after Thomas' men left, a doctor came over. "How are they?" Unplugging the phone that Thomas got me for me yesterday, I noticed I had a text message from him. “Tammy, darling. We will be leaving for Canada today. The sooner we get there, the less the Vampire Council will be agitated. They do not like people dilly-daddling, as one would say. I will pick you up as soon as the sun sets this evening. Make sure to pack some warm clothes. It will be quite chilly up there. See you soon, my love. Thomas.”

I explain as I hear the rumble of Thomas bike turn into the street and park in the driveway. “Hahahaha. That is more than a bonus, that’s a game changer – the thought of having to give my father a sponge bath gives me nightmares.” He follows the text with a line of emoji's 💀💀💀💀🤢🤢🤢🤢 that make me giggle. I send back 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂. “You texting Finn?” Thomas asks as he comes in, dropping the takeaway on the coffee table and then heading up the stairs to dump his bag in the spare room.

Thomas looked around the table. At Noah. At Claire. At Gregory. At Daniel. At Maria. At Victor. At the teachers. At the villagers. At children who had never known the fear that once haunted these walls. He smiled. Not because the story had ended. Because it no longer belonged to him. Outside, the stream carried dozens of paper boats toward the valley. Some sank. Some floated. All of them continued moving. Just as life always had. Thomas gently stood, walked to the front door, and opened it wide.

He does his thing and Thomas's room appears on the screen. He's sitting on his bed with the phone in his hands. After some time, Thomas places the phone on his ears like he's talking with someone. "His number, hurry" I quickly pass him my phone so he will take Tom's number. He doesn't take the time hacking it and we are to hear what he's saying. "Yes, master" his voice comes through. We are not able to make out what the other person is saying so we settle on listening to his side.

Thomas was five and starting kindergarten. She had known this morning was coming for five years — known it abstractly, the way you know the things that are ahead of you when you are still at the beginning of them, with the knowledge that does not yet have weight. Now it had weight. She stood in the driveway in September with George beside her and Thomas in front of them with his backpack on and his specific expression — the one that had been his father's and had become his own over five years of being used for different purposes.

Thomas himself was built like a tank, with three sons who looked like they could bench-press small cars. “So you're Christian's new female.” Thomas looked me up and down. “Here to tell me I'm wrong about my territory?” “I'm here to listen to your case.” For the next hour, Thomas shouted. Literally shouted. About his grandfather's markers, his family's maintenance of the hunting trails, and his contributions to the pack. His wife, Linda, sat in the corner, wringing her hands, looking like she'd aged ten years from stress. Thomas's youngest son, Michael, kept glancing at his phone, his expression miserable.
