The night before it begins, Maya and Jin are still working at midnight. This is partly because there is work to do. It is also because neither of them intends to say the thing both are thinking: that this may be the last quiet night for some time. Possibly the last quiet night for one of them altogether. They do not say that. They work. The apocalypse has produced many coping mechanisms. Denial. Prayer. Aggressive vegetable gardening. Maya and Jin prefer paperwork. Tonight, they are building Jin’s part of the plan. The medical contingencies. The field protocols. The clean, cold arithmetic of treating people they are preparing to place deliberately in danger.

My mind went into a downward spiral, thinking up ways to survive a crazy, zombie apocalypse. 1.) Machetes instead of guns, that way I won't run out of ammo. 2.) Find reliable allies. Let's see, Rick has Daryl in The Walking Dead and Roberta has Addy in Z-Nation. Ok, so I guess werewolf friends would come in handy if there's ever an outbreak - but can a werewolf become a zombie? SHIT! I don't think I'd survive a zombie-werewolf apocalypse.

They felt like a countdown to something a lot closer than that. We got to the facility just after sunrise, parked the truck a quarter mile down the service road, and walked the rest of the way on foot. Cassian had a crowbar in one hand again, which I was starting to understand was less about breaking things and more about having something solid to hold onto. We heard it before we saw it. Machinery. Low, steady, the sound of something being mixed. "That's a cement mixer," Cassian said, stopping dead. "Somebody's running a cement mixer at your abandoned family bunker at six in the morning."

Then it was gone, replaced by his usual professional mask. "I'll be in touch," he said, and got into his car. Maya watched him drive away, then stood alone in the empty parking garage. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting strange shadows. In the distance, she could hear sirens. Two weeks. She had two weeks to destroy Ethan, warn the world about the freeze, and figure out how to survive the apocalypse. It seemed impossible. But Maya had lived through impossible before. She had survived betrayal, divorce, and the end of the world. She would survive this too.

} Amanda's pulse quickened immediately. Amanda went completely still. The words struck harder than the warning about the movement. “Unreliable?” she whispered. “What does that mean?” {Previous projections should not be treated as certain.} She read it again carefully. She looked toward the fortress, where workers continued moving materials and equipment beneath the afternoon sky. Everything she had built depended on time. She had believed thirty days would be enough for everything. Now even the information that had guided her preparation was changing. Amanda pressed her palm against her stomach, feeling the weight of everything she had to protect. “Then I cannot trust the future anymore.”

"Then we can use that." "Yes." I turned toward the map. "We're going to set traps. We're going to fortify the defenses. We're going to train the survivors. We're going to prepare for the largest battle of the apocalypse." The council was silent. Then Adrian spoke. "How do we do that?" I smiled. "I'll show you." The days that followed were brutal. I trained the survivors. I taught them how to fight. How to survive. How to work together. I led the construction of defenses. Walls. Trenches. Traps. Everything we could build to slow the infected.

To empty the warehouse. Lila broke a piece of the furniture in the mall and wrote the word empty, before placing it at the front of the mall. Not that it'll help much, people would still go in to see if it's really empty. She couldn't help but rejoice at the fact that the apocalypse began at dawn, imagine it begun at daytime. She'd have had to fight so many zombies and her resources would have been stained with blood. Lila did the same thing she did in her city, emptying some supermarkets, malls and pharmacies while leaving some for others. After which she drove to gas stations to get fuels and gas.

If Ruth consumes blood, it might awaken her zombie instincts! [Dan’s group just had a tire blowout. They’re surrounded by a zombie horde right now. Callie pushed Dan out to stall the zombies so she could escape!] When I saw that comment, I couldn’t help but laugh. “What are you laughing at?” Ruth tilted her head and looked at me. “Nothing,” I said, hugging her arm and planting a kiss on her cheek. “I just think… the weather’s really nice today.” For the next month, I lived the most comfortable life I’d had since the apocalypse began. Ruth and I occupied a villa complex halfway up a mountain. It was easy to defend and hard to attack, and supplies were plentiful.

But when they looked at me, their eyes were filled with contempt, saying my sister generously gave me the multimillion-dollar inheritance and the estate, yet I showed no gratitude at all. They wondered how the Shaw family had produced such an ungrateful brat. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. Sharon didn’t genuinely want the convenience store. She only knew that in one month, a zombie virus would sweep across the globe. By then, money would be worthless, while the supplies inside that tiny store would become the key to survival. But what Sharon didn’t know was that in the apocalypse, having supplies meant nothing. The real challenge was keeping them in your hands.

With my ability to live just by absorbing the water particles in the air, I was guaranteed to survive the apocalypse. I boarded up all the windows except for the one near the balcony as a safety precaution. I then picked up the novel I had been reading. It was part of the resources that I had quickly gathered while everyone was busy fighting over the money and mocking me earlier. I had a few novels, card games, and puzzles. Although they seemed to be useless in a plant apocalypse, they were essential in keeping me sane in an isolated environment.
