She can't get rid of the feeling that everyone is watching her, their judging eyes convicting her for lying. Halfway through the lecture, a sudden movement outside the window catches her attention. The professor is completely unaware of the two black SUVs passing the front gates of the campus. He continues his speech about the iced bioregions, but Tammy has long stopped paying attention. She has seen these cars before. She remembers like it was yesterday, how the bald man had lowered the tinted window letting her and Grace know her parents got infected. These cars are the messengers of death.

Then, with a deafening crack, the shadowy figure let out a roar, and Ethan was thrown backward, his body crashing into the ground. “Ethan!” Sasha screamed, scrambling toward him. The shadowy figure turned its burning eyes on her, and the doppelgänger’s voice echoed in her mind, a chilling whisper. “Choose, Sasha. Before it’s too late.” The chapter ended with the shadow closing in on Sasha, her desperate scream piercing the air as the world around her seemed to collapse.
