Tokyo unfolded outside my window like a living painting, towering glass skyscrapers reflecting pale winter sunlight, narrow streets lined with red-and-white lanterns, salarymen in dark suits hurrying along sidewalks, the occasional flash of color from a schoolgirl’s scarf or a street vendor’s umbrella. Everything moved with quiet, purposeful energy.
