the Tom/Tori tag is a weird one. It’s not huge, so finding the good stuff feels like a personal mission. Most stories fall into the 'popular guy/quiet girl' trope, which can get stale fast. But there’s this one longfic called 'Static Interference' that completely sidesteps that. It's a modern AU where they're rival radio hosts on a college station, forced to do a late-night show together. The banter is so sharp and the hostility-to-trust arc feels earned, not rushed.
It’s less about romance and more about two flawed people understanding each other's loneliness through midnight conversations. The writing is sparse and dialogue-heavy, which fits the premise perfectly. I’ve re-read the scene where Tori finally calls Tom out on his performative cynicism probably a dozen times. The author hasn't updated in a while, which kills me, but what’s there is absolutely worth it. The rest of the fandom seems obsessed with high school AUs, but this one actually made me believe in the pairing.
