He was the Keeper. “You captured Death,” I whispered. “That’s why he can’t leave.” “That is why he is mine. His power is mine!” the King corrected, stepping closer again, and I stumbled a step back, my heel bumping into my mother’s body. “The crown before was a joke! It was weak and crumbled so easily!”

King let his tail move up and rest on the other tom's shoulder, a universal sign of support from his time though rarely seen now. But the other tom seemed to understand anyway. "Thank you. Say, can you make sure we don't have any more stragglers? I'd love to save another one or two." King was feeling incredibly blessed, a weird unheard-of feeling for the Black Devil himself, as the tom handed him a ring thick with keys. "Sure, it's this one, right?" He held up one of the keys hoping to get the tom to tell him which key did what.

Tom wore a long robe trimmed in gold and silver while Rex wore a nicely cut suit. They reached the front of the room and the cheering quieted as Tom began to speak. “Long has the werewolf kingdom been fractured from civil war,” Tom said, his eyes glossy with unshed tears and pride as he looked at them. “After today, no more. None of the villagers knew about the King if he was dead or alive but here the tax collector stood spreading the news of the King's death. She doubts he has ever met the king.
