She turned and walked away without another word, boots echoing down the corridor until silence returned, leaving Scarlett alone with the ruined meal.
Scarlett stared at the ruined food for a long moment. Her stomach clenched painfully. Slowly, painfully, she crawled forward, chains clinking, stretching as far as the iron allowed until she could reach the edge of the bars. She stretched her arm far, fingers trembling as she scooped what she could reach, scraping at the wet mush. She managed a few spoonfuls, swallowing past the lump in her throat—gritty, cold, tasteless, barely food—before the rest became unreachable.
