What he stood to gain from killing the man. Yet I couldn’t ask them. At least not now. Not until I understood my heart. I clutched the book I borrowed from the library tightly to my chest as I crossed the lawn. It was a book about spirit wolves. Ancient beings that existed before wolves came into light. It’s been two days since I started reading it, trying to understand what I saw that night at the shore. Trying to make sense of the being that stood in the light that nearly took my sight from me. At the same time, I was trying to distract myself from Vincent and the silence between us. I stepped onto the lawn, walking past the fountain when I noticed the eyes watching from a distance.

Wednesday. It was finally time to submit my book report on Great Expectations. As I handed in my five-paged report to Ms. Borja, I breathed a sigh of relief. I went through a lot to finish my report, struggling with a roller coaster of emotions and several all too familiar parallelisms along the way, but I overcame everything and came up with a report that I was proud of. Though it was somehow bittersweet that it was over, I knew that I would always remember the life and love lessons from Great Expectations.

My pulse hammered in my ears, every nerve screaming flight, but my feet stayed rooted to the ground. The wolf circled me slowly, each heavy step echoing through the fog, its presence pressing down like the weight of a storm. Its voice rolled through my mind like distant thunder. "Triad bearer," it rumbled. "The bond awakens, but it is incomplete. Threads fray at the edges." I swallowed hard, forcing myself to stand tall despite the tremble in my limbs. "What do you mean? Why did she just stand there when she could slowly back away while the bear was busy with the bush? She watched the bear. For some reason, she was not afraid. Arabella knew this bear could eat her but she did not believe it would. She was afraid there when babies near by. If that were so then all bets were off. When no other bear came into the clearing, Arabella relaxed and backed away, leaving the bear in peace. She felt a kinship with the bear that surprised her. She kept getting feelings at times that told her she had done that action before. Maybe it was wishful thinking on her part.

Her finger moved beneath each word, whether she needed it to or not. Léo had arrived at six-thirty with bread from the bakery two streets over—the dark sourdough with seeds Chloe called the crunchy bread. We had eaten at the kitchen table while the rain gathered itself outside. No one had commented on it. It did not require acknowledgement. After dinner, Chloe moved to the sofa. I look at his body and see some mud in the wound by his ribs, I feel dirty thinking that if it were my wound I would hate it and the worry of infection even lingering in my mind.

“ Just how are you able to sleep at night? When you left your daughter at the mercy of her abusive stepmother and a wicked father..” “ No. I didn’t…”She murmured. “ I will never do that to you.” “ But you did …Mom! You did!” I shrieked and harshly wiped my tears away with the back of my hand and breathed out sharply. “ I guess you never cared," I uttered and a loud sob tore out of her throat. " You were in a hurry to jump into the bed of the white bear .” I gave a mock laugh hiding the pain in my voice.

I cannot contain the thrill that is in my voice. "That day in the office with Alexander," Esau says as he grins brightly at me. "I saw your spirit in the corner of the room." "My spirit?" I ask quietly. Esau sits down on the end of the bed while he continues to gently clean my foot. "Have you ever found yourself in a place where no one can see you? Where it feels like a dream but it also feels real at the same time?" I nod my head eagerly. "That is your spirit viewing the world without your body being present. It is a gift that some wolves have. White ones in particular."
