At the top of the stairwell, they emerged into a huge underground atrium. Once, it had probably been a transit hub—glass ceilings, towering pillars, escalators that stretched toward the surface. Now it was silent except for the faint hum of power still coursing through broken screens and cables dangling like vines.
In the center of the atrium stood the Nexus Tower—a black spire that pierced through the floor above, its base surrounded by dozens of dead monitors and half-collapsed terminals. The tower’s surface wasn’t smooth anymore; it shimmered like liquid metal, veins of crimson code crawling across it.
