After a moment’s waiting, the door creaked open and a maid stepped into the room. Her scent was familiar. Not anyone I knew personally, but not someone who stuck out in a place like this. She smelled like the kitchens and a bit of soap. She smelled like pack, not an outsider. Not someone who didn’t belong. She was carrying a tray with soup on it. Chicken noodle. Fresh. “Forgive the intrusion, Prince,” the maid said. Her voice was light, young, and trembling slightly like she was nervous. “But with the Prime Beta gone, and the Queen indisposed, I was elected to serve you your lunch.”

She felt the sweat beading on her forehead and pushed back her angry tears. She heard noise in the kitchen, cabinets opening, the oven door and a few moments later Troy returned to the bedroom carrying a tray containing a plate piled high with meatloaf, mashed potatoes, the fresh green beans that she'd bought earlier in the week but had been too lazy to cook, as well as cornbread made with white cornmeal instead of the yellow that everyone else seemed to use.

There is a small round bowl of cooked beans at one edge of the tray, a bunch of grapes, a bottle of water, and a glass jar of fresh pineapple juice occupy the rest of the tray. In a very small transparent plastic, there is jar and in another one, chocolate.

"I knew you'd love this, princess. And we haven't even started yet." She stood upright, alternately ashamed that such things could excite her so, and aroused at the ideas they created.
