Inside the cave, a long, narrow cave tunnel stretched deep into darkness. The passage is carved through rough, jagged rock, with uneven walls that curve inward and overhead, forming a natural, almost claustrophobic corridor. The stone surfaces are damp and glistening, catching the light in subtle highlights. Along both sides of the tunnel, iron brackets are mounted at regular intervals. Each holding a flickering flame that cast a warm, orange glow against the cold, dark stone. Not much—just the faintest thinning of black ahead of them, barely noticeable unless you were starving for light. A pale grey wash seeped into the tunnel from a narrow tributary on the right, like moonlight slipping through a keyhole. “There,” Ethan whispered. “Runoff tunnel. Private residences all feed into the main line through sealed channels. That one’s cleaner. Maintained. It has to be connected.”

He clutched his flashlight tighter, its feeble light offering scant comfort in the overwhelming darkness.
