Man, that ending was a gut punch I didn't see coming. The whole 'mind-rain' plan working? Okay, maybe. But Tally willingly becoming a 'Special' again, after everything she fought against, to bridge the gap between pretties and the Smoke? That floored me. It wasn't a clean victory. The cure for the brain lesions was spreading, but the old world was still broken. Tally choosing to live in the ruins of the pretty system, to be a permanent bridge and enforcer, felt so dark and mature for a YA series.

I spent the whole series thinking the climax would be destroying the Pretty operation. Instead, it's about a painful, compromised integration. The twist that Shay, of all people, ends up being a sort of ally in the new order was another shocker. It left me feeling unsettled for days, which I guess was the point. No neat bow, just a messy, believable new beginning born from a huge personal sacrifice.

I grabbed the original 'Uglies' trilogy a few years back, the ones with the big, bold concepts everyone talked about. So, core order is obviously 'Uglies', then 'Pretties', and finally 'Specials'. That's the heart of Tally's story. But Westerfeld added more after that.

A lot of folks don't realize 'Extras' is technically fourth, but it's more of a spinoff set in a different city with a new main character. I'd still read it after 'Specials' because it plays with the consequences of the trilogy's ending. I found 'Impostors' and 'Mirrors'—that new duology—way later, and they're a different era. Chronologically, they happen after 'Extras', but they feel almost like a soft reboot. You could almost treat them as their own separate thing, though knowing the world history helps.
