Rowan As I lay in a cot in the safe house, all I can do is think of Harper. Headphones on my head, music playing on loud. I have a small journal in my backpack; I never go anywhere without it. It's none of Harper's journals. I re-read one of my favorite poems she wrote. It will always be my favorite one. It is titled: "A Freckled Universe of You":

"By the way, what are you coming here for?" While tidying up the papers and some files on her messy desk, Harper tried to get Amber's attention away from Alex and whatever possibility she was thinking. And while she was arranging all the papers on the side of the table, the tail of her eyes accidentally caught the silhouette of a black book on the table that she had not touched for a long time because she had been struggling with Alex's problems and the things that have been haunting her for too long. She then grabbed the novel and stuffed it into her handbag. Hope to read it again when the moment is right to read. "It's about Tyler."

I stood in the center of the room, my hands shaking slightly as I unbuttoned my trench coat and let it slide to the floor. Underneath, I was still wearing my office blouse and pencil skirt, but the fabric felt heavy and suffocating against my heated skin. I expected them to be rough. I expected them to claim me like the cold, ruthless businessmen they were, to treat me like a transaction they had just finalized. But as the three of them closed the distance, the absolute opposite happened. Adrian was the first to reach me. His massive, calloused hands didn't tear at my clothes; instead, they cupped my face with a shocking, breathtaking gentleness.

Daniel thought bookstores were inefficient. “Remember this place?” Harper pulls me inside. The familiar smell of paper and coffee hits me—sandalwood and possibility and all the hours I used to spend here in college, hiding between shelves and dreaming of a future that looked nothing like my present. “You practically lived here junior year.” Harper stops in the journal section, pulling down a leather-bound notebook. “Write in this.” “Harper” “My treat. Consider it a very late divorce gift.” She presses it into my hands. “Write everything you’re feeling. Everything you can’t say out loud. Get it out of your head where you can actually look at it.”

“The others came through the business. They were already in the lifestyle. They came to us with expectations.” Nathan leans forward slightly. “She’s fresh. A clean canvas. And a clean canvas, if she trusts the ones holding the brush, will want far more than someone who’s already been burned.” He’s right. It’s always the same with the others. Their first experiences shaped everything. One bad scene and suddenly even light choking is off the table. One selfish Dom and they think aftercare is a myth. But Harper… Harper hasn’t been tainted. She’s coming into this without scars, without jaded cynicism, just curiosity and cautious hope.

She just pretended she did when she was only interested in getting laid. “I’ve asked you before to not sleep with the newer warriors. They don’t understand your ways” it wasn’t the first time I had some jilted fresh warrior. Harper was undeniably beautiful and a formidable warrior and officer, but she was damaged and she took her damage out in mindless fucking.

The collaboration between Brighton and Fortuna was completed under her guidance. "A young, beautiful, and talented woman? She even refuses to acknowledge her mother. What kind of decent girl would seduce the uncle of a man she was engaged to? "She's nothing more than a sly fox. I'm sure Fortuna only collaborated with Brighton because of Mr. Harper. "No matter how great Mr. Harper is, he's still a man, and men can be seduced. But Mr. Harper Junior won't fall for it." "In all these years, have you ever seen Mr. Harper bring a woman home? Another second, and he might have lost control, choking Harper with his bare hands. Her white t-shirt was stained with blood and she was, for all intents, dead. Harper had explained in detail about her own experience. How she had burned up from the angel grace and how she had ended up in the Neverplain with the angel trying to connect with her. I tried to block out most of what she was saying. I still had nightmares about what Nathaniel did and how I saw her die in front of my own eyes. It was still painful to hear that Nathaniel and unknowingly triggered her transition. Or maybe he knew, he sure seemed shocked when Harper appeared in the woods and sliced him in half. Maybe certain branches of the Circle knew more than others. I hated we were so in the dark.

"Sometimes the people who safeguard us. become the ones we lean so much on that we forget to stand without them." "And sometimes the people we count on. are the ones breaking our fall when we think we've already hit." She lifted her head. And for a moment, all the chaos in her head stopped. But before she had a chance to do anything, there was movement from the stairs. Nathaniel Harper. Hair tousled by the rain the night before, now dry but disheveled. He was dressed in a white shirt—loose, open at the collar—and his normal composure appeared exchanged for something gentler. A vulnerable iteration of the composed man that the world knew to fear.
