I ended up getting a job in Tokyo myself and while I did continue to live with his now family of three, I was on the lookout for a place of my own. Hiro-san, or Fuyukawa Hiromitsu, was my brother’s classmate in university. The two of them have been close since their days as classmates. Incidentally, Hiro-san too had been offered a job in Tokyo and he has been living in the city for over a year now. The whole of the city is laid out beyond my bedroom window. We entered the city on flat roads but the landscape this side of the palace is all hills and I can see most of the city spread out before me. I have never seen anything like it. All the different buildings, the colour, I couldn’t see individual people but I could see movement and signs of life in the streets.
