The iron hatches of the sky-ships slammed shut. The massive engines roared, unleashing a wave of hot air that shook the keep, and the three giant vessels rose slowly into the heavy grey clouds, vanishing toward the distant Imperial Capital.
The courtyard went dead silent.
Vance staggered up from the gravel, wiping the blood from his neck. He walked up the broken outer stairs and stepped into the destroyed study, standing beside me on the shattered balcony.
