I slammed the engine to life, the tires spinning in the dirt as I floored it.
"Darius, my father!" Iris looked back.
Arthur was standing in the middle of the clearing, clutching his ledger to his chest as the red mist swallowed him whole. He didn't scream. He just vanished into the crimson dark, the leather-bound book the last thing I saw before the fog claimed him.
I didn't look back. I drove like a man possessed, the van bouncing over the uneven terrain as we raced away from the gorge.
"We're just humans in a van, Iris," I said, a dark, hysterical laugh bubbling up as I checked the rearview mirror. "No pack, no palace, and a world that’s currently turning into a horror show."
