He'd say he had, then shut his own door.
One night, he worked late, and by the time he got back, only the green glow of the exit sign lit the hallway. He opened the door to find the light in his room broken. He never fixed it.
He sat on the edge of the bed. Moonlight fell through the window, landing right on the silver necklace. He picked it up and studied it in the moonlight for a long time. Her name was engraved on it, worn nearly smooth now.
